SPC flooring vs. tiles – what is better?

In a building project, flooring is one of the most important decisions because it will determine the mood of the rooms in the building. Choosing the right type of flooring  is an arduous task because each material has certain advantages and disadvantages, but the most important thing is to get the right material for you. You need to know which flooring material is suitable for your project.

Be it ceramic tile, carpet, or Luxury Vinyl Plank, the cost of flooring can be one of the biggest expenses of any interior remodelling or building project. One of the biggest factors that determines the quality of a floor is the choice of material.

Let’s have a look at the difference between tiles and SPC flooring, so you can find out which is better for your project.

1. Flooring Installation

Floor tiles have been around for a long time. But the way we lay our tiles and put them together has evolved greatly over the years. The tiles can be laid in different ways, and are fixed together in different ways. You will find that even the same type of tiles are not suitable for different types of floors. The most common way to install tiles is with thin-set mortar. The biggest challenge is to make sure all tiles are installed with equal spacing, and to cut the tiles at the corners and edges of the room. Since tiles are installed with mortar, we believe tiles are more suitable for uneven subfloors, compared to SPC flooring.

SPC flooring is a type of engineered stone that is made of multiple layers. SPC is a rigid core flooring with a vinyl core. Most commonly SPC flooring works with a click installation, so you don’t have to worry about gaps or equal spacing. But also with SPC flooring, you will need to cut the planks at the side of the room to fit your layout.

Anyway, for both flooring materials you can do a DIY installation.

2. Maintenance and Life Span

To put it into a nutshell, both floorings can be cleaned with steam mops or vacuum cleaner.

SPC flooring has been popular for a long time, but what you didn’t know is that it actually improves the life span of your flooring! SPC flooring is made of multiple layers, that make the floor more durable and long-lasting than the traditional wood plank. In addition, SPC flooring is water and scratch resistant, so it can be used for commercial or public areas. The life span of your SPC flooring depends on the wear layer on top. If you are using the flooring in a public area with heavy traffic, you should make sure to choose at least a wear layer of 5/ 0.5 mm

There are several ways to maintain your tile floor and make it look great. One of the simplest, and most effective ways, is to clean your floor with floor cleaners. So tiles are also very simple to maintain. But one of the biggest disadvantages of tiles is that they can crack or break. In this case, you will need to replace the tile. So we believe that tiles have a shorter life span than SPC flooring.

3. Cost

SPC flooring and tiles are both very similarly priced. There is quality and price difference, but the low-end and high-end options of both cost about the same.

In our experience, you should expect to pay 7 to 10 USD per square meter, or 0.7 to 1 USD per square foot. Also, the installation costs for both flooring are very similar.

4. Waterproof

Tiles and SPC flooring are both waterproof flooring, and therefore perfect for bathrooms or kitchens.

5. Advantages/Disadvantages
